What Edits does well
Edits is Instagram's own editor. The App Store listing says it is free, exports in 4K with no watermark, and has an insights dashboard for how your Reels perform. Instagram's help center covers captions, filters, color adjustment, effects, cutouts and stickers, and you can export to your camera roll or share straight to Instagram. For a Reels-first creator, that is hard to beat for $0.
What CapCut does well
CapCut runs on phone, desktop and web, which Edits does not. It has a much larger template library and AI tools. Pro at $19.99/mo (a reference price that varies by region) adds 1,200 AI credits a month and 1 TB of storage. Its watermark usually comes from a default ending clip, which you can delete.
Cross-posting
If you post the same video to TikTok, Shorts and Reels, CapCut is the more neutral choice. If Reels is where you grow, edit in Edits and use its insights. Some creators cut in CapCut on a laptop, then finish and post Reels from Edits on the phone.
What each costs over a year
- Edits: $0 for editing and 4K export. In-app purchases exist but aren't described on the listing.
- CapCut free: $0, with basic tools and free templates.
- CapCut Pro: $19.99 × 12 = $239.88 at the reference monthly price, before regional or annual discounts.
Final verdict: pick by situation
- Your audience is on Instagram: Edits. It is free, exports 4K without a watermark and shows Reels insights.
- Your audience is on TikTok: CapCut. Its templates follow TikTok trends.
- You post the same video everywhere: CapCut, then upload the export to each app.
- You edit on a computer: CapCut. Edits is a phone app.
- You want zero spend: either. Edits states no watermark; with CapCut, delete the ending clip.
Whichever you pick, keep your raw footage backed up outside the app.
