A Short over 1 minute with any copyright claim is blocked and can't be recommended at all. Reused content without meaningful changes can also stop a channel earning. Once those are clear, the usual cause is that viewers swipe away in the first seconds.
YouTube doesn't publish how the Shorts feed picks videos, so the fixes below separate YouTube's stated rules from practical advice.
1. Check for copyright claims (most common for 0 views)
Open YouTube Studio and look at the Short's restrictions. YouTube says a Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim of any type is blocked worldwide: it can't be played or recommended. Remove the claimed music or footage, trim the Short under 1 minute, or dispute the claim if it's wrong. See Shorts length rules.
2. Check the length and format
Shorts must be up to 3 minutes and square or vertical. A horizontal video, or one longer than 3 minutes, is treated as a regular video and won't show in the Shorts feed.
3. Make sure it's original
YouTube's reused content policy allows reused material only when viewers can see a meaningful difference from the original, such as commentary, reactions or remixes that add your own audio or video. Shorts that are unedited clips from movies or TV, or reuploads, don't count for Shorts revenue sharing.
4. Fix the first 2 seconds (practical advice)
Viewers decide fast. Start with the payoff or the question, not an intro. Put a short on-screen caption in the first frame. Our caption checklist covers readable captions, and you can find hook and script tools to test openings.
5. Keep it tight
A Short people watch to the end, or rewatch, tends to do better than a long one they leave halfway. Cut pauses and repeated lines. Tools like CapCut make this quick on a phone.
6. Post consistently and check analytics
One Short is a small sample. Post regularly, then use YouTube Studio analytics to see where viewers swipe away, and adjust the next one.
Questions
Why does my YouTube Short have 0 views?
Check copyright first. A Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim is blocked and can't be played or recommended. Also check it's vertical or square and no longer than 3 minutes.
Is "Shorts jail" real?
YouTube doesn't use that term. What it does confirm: claimed Shorts over 1 minute are blocked, and non-original content doesn't count for revenue sharing. Most other drops come from low viewer interest in the first seconds.
Does reused content stop Shorts getting views?
YouTube's reused content policy is about monetization: reused content needs a meaningful difference from the original to earn. Unedited clips and reuploads don't count for Shorts revenue sharing.
How long should a YouTube Short be to get views?
Shorts can be up to 3 minutes, but if you use copyrighted music, staying under 1 minute avoids the block on claimed Shorts.
