Short answer: start with the free captions built into the platform you post to. YouTube creates automatic captions you can edit in YouTube Studio, and Instagram can add closed captions to Reels automatically. If you want styled, burned-in captions (text drawn onto the video itself) with no watermark on a free plan, captionrich is the only tool here whose pricing page says every plan exports without a watermark. For regular posting, ZapCap Starter at $8/mo and SubtitleGenerator Pro at $9/mo are the cheapest paid steps. Submagic and Captions cost more but add effects and editing.

Free baseline: the platforms' own captions

YouTube automatic captions

YouTube uses speech recognition to create captions in dozens of languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Hindi. Its help page says quality varies with accents, mispronunciation and background noise, so review them. You can fix mistakes in YouTube Studio under Subtitles. Live stream auto captions are English only. These captions are a track viewers can switch on, not styled text burned into the video.

Instagram Reels and Edits

Instagram uses speech recognition to create closed captions for Reels automatically, and you can turn them on or off. Meta's free Edits app can also generate captions from spoken audio, with a choice of language, caption style and transcription controls.
