Quick answer: Thumbs.ai and Perplexity both made on-topic AI thumbnails from our title for free, but both changed our words, so plan to fix the text. Thumbs.ai gave a 2752x1536 PNG in about 75 seconds, and Perplexity gave a 2048x1152 JPG in 1 minute 18 seconds. Thumbnail.AI gave our new account 0 AI credits, so its free option is a manual maker. If you would rather design it yourself, see our list of thumbnail makers without AI.
The thumbnail and title work together, so the words on the image matter as much as the picture. We gave three tools one title and checked the image size, the text on the image and every corner for a watermark. After the test, we list other AI image and thumbnail tools with their free options and paid plans.
We gave the same Egyptian sick-notes title to 3 thumbnail tools
We gave three tools the title "Ancient Egyptian Workers Had Sick Notes". Perplexity and Thumbs.ai made on-topic images but changed the words; Thumbnail.AI had 0 free AI credits, so we used its manual Free Maker.
| Tool | Title on image | Time | Watermark | Account needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail.AITested Oct 27, 2026 | Spelled right | About 1 min | None | Needed for AI Create |
| Thumbs.aiTested Oct 27, 2026 | Shortened title | About 75 s | Not seen in our test | Free account |
| PerplexityTested Oct 29, 2026 | Dropped "Workers" | 1 min 18 s | None visible | Free account |
A dash means we did not record it. Thumbnail.AI's time is manual editing, not AI generation. Thumbs.ai: none seen in our test, but its pricing page says the free plan includes a watermark.

How we tested
- Each tool got the title "Ancient Egyptian Workers Had Sick Notes" on its default settings, from Oct 27 to 29, 2026. Perplexity got it inside a request: Make a YouTube thumbnail for a video titled ...
- We downloaded each result, checked its size, looked for a watermark in every corner and read the text on the image.
- We used free accounts on all three. Thumbnail.AI gave a new account 0 AI credits, so we used its manual Free Thumbnail Maker.
