Is Suno music copyright free? (2026)

Short answer: no, not in the "do anything you like" sense. Songs made on Suno's Free plan are for personal, non-commercial use only. Paid plans (Pro at $8/mo, Premier at $24/mo) give you commercial rights, but only for songs you download within your plan's monthly allowance, and Suno says it makes no promise that any copyright exists in the output. If you plan to monetize a channel, use a paid plan or a human-made library such as Uppbeat or the YouTube Audio Library.

This isn't legal advice. Policies change, so check the linked official pages before you rely on them.

What Suno's terms actually say

  • Free plan: you may use outputs "for your lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes." There is no rights assignment to you on Free.
  • Pro and Premier: Suno assigns its rights in the output to you, but the output "will remain subject to these Terms of Service including any applicable commercial use restrictions." Commercial use covers downloads within your tier's monthly allocation (20 a month on Pro, 60 on Premier per the pricing page).
  • After you cancel: the terms say commercial rights on those downloads are "perpetual" and not affected by cancellation, downgrade or expiry.
  • Remixes of other users' songs are jointly owned and limited to personal, non-commercial use on any tier.
  • Copyright itself: Suno "makes no representation or warranty to you that any copyright will vest in any Output." Output can also be similar to what other users generate.

"Copyright free" vs "you have commercial rights"

These are different things. Commercial rights from Suno mean Suno won't object to you making money from the track. They don't mean you hold an enforceable copyright, and they don't stop a third party from claiming something similar. Because Suno says it gives no warranty that copyright vests, be careful about registering Suno songs with Content ID-style distribution services: you may be claiming rights you can't prove.

Using Suno music on YouTube

  • Free-plan songs in a monetized video: that is commercial use, which the Free terms don't allow.
  • YouTube's own rules still apply. Suno's terms note that other platforms' rules govern use there. YouTube's monetization policies say "AI-generated content made with generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production" is not eligible. A channel of nothing but generated songs over static images is the risky pattern.
  • Disclosure: YouTube's altered or synthetic content page lists realistic AI music that is the main focus of a video among cases that may need disclosure. It also says disclosure "won't limit a video's audience or impact its eligibility to earn money."

Safer options if you just need background music

  • YouTube Audio Library: YouTube says its royalty-free tracks won't get a Content ID claim.
  • Uppbeat: free tier with a credit line; paid plans safelist your channel.
  • Epidemic Sound: subscription; videos published while subscribed stay cleared.
  • Udio is the other main AI song tool. Read its terms the same way before monetizing.

Verdict

  • Personal projects and experiments: Suno Free is fine.
  • Monetized videos with a few songs a month: Suno Pro ($8/mo, 20 downloads).
  • Background music with no copyright questions: a human-made library such as the YouTube Audio Library.
  • Selling or distributing Suno songs as your own: be careful; Suno makes no promise that copyright exists in the output.
