Can I use TikTok Commercial Music Library songs on YouTube? (2026)

Short answer: no. The TikTok Commercial Music Library (CML) licenses its tracks for use on TikTok. TikTok's own terms say "Commercial Uses outside of TikTok are not permitted and no rights are granted by TikTok for such uses," and they name "posting videos on third party digital platforms" as an outside use. If you repost a TikTok to YouTube Shorts, swap the audio for a track licensed for YouTube, such as one from the YouTube Audio Library, Uppbeat or Epidemic Sound.

This isn't legal advice. Policies change, so check the linked official pages before you rely on them.

What TikTok's CML terms say

  • Commercial uses outside TikTok are not permitted, and TikTok grants no rights for them.
  • Outside uses include posting videos on third-party digital platforms and use in TV, radio or theatrical media.
  • Any use outside TikTok needs separate permission and licensing directly from the rights holders.
  • In the CML web portal, only platforms listed under "Usable Placements" are allowed. Treat any platform not listed as not permitted.
  • Premium tracks may carry an extra fee.

TikTok's marketing describes CML songs as pre-cleared for commercial use. That refers to use on TikTok. The legal terms are narrower, and they're what count.

What happens if you post a CML track on YouTube anyway

You'd be using music without a licence for that platform. If the track is registered in Content ID, YouTube can claim the video. YouTube says claimed Shorts over one minute are blocked, and claimed Shorts over one minute are not eligible for monetization (Shorts music help, Shorts monetization policy). Even if no claim appears, you still don't have a licence.

Where CML tracks can and can't go

Where you postCML track allowed?Use instead
TikTok organic posts, ads, branded contentYes-
YouTube Shorts or long videosNoShorts audio picker or YouTube Audio Library
Instagram Reels, FacebookNo, unless listed under "Usable Placements"Meta's in-app music or a multi-platform library
TV, radio, cinemaNoA licence from the rights holders

TikTok's Ads help page also says businesses should use the CML, not the general music library, for all commercial TikTok activity, including duets, stitches and ads.

How to cross-post safely

  1. Export without TikTok audio. Keep a version of your edit without music in your editor (for example CapCut) before you add sounds in the TikTok app.
  2. Add music on each platform. On YouTube, add a song from the Shorts audio picker, which YouTube licenses for Shorts.
  3. Or use one library cleared for both. A library licensed for multiple platforms lets you upload one file everywhere. Check each library's terms: Epidemic Sound's Creator plan covers one monetized channel per platform; Uppbeat's free plan needs a credit line per video; Pixabay Music is free.
  4. Use the YouTube Audio Library for YouTube-only uploads. YouTube says its royalty-free tracks won't get a Content ID claim.

Verdict

  • TikTok only: CML is the right choice for business accounts.
  • TikTok plus YouTube: export a music-free master and add music per platform, or use a library licensed for both.
  • Zero cost, YouTube only: YouTube Audio Library.

FAQ

Can I use TikTok Commercial Music Library songs on YouTube Shorts?

No. TikTok's terms limit CML tracks to TikTok and the listed usable placements. You need separate permission from the rights holders.

Is TikTok Commercial Music Library copyright free?

No. It is licensed music for use on TikTok, not public domain.

Can I download TikTok Commercial Music Library songs?

The terms bar using the sounds apart from the videos they're in. Don't treat downloaded CML files as a general-purpose music library.

What music can I use on both TikTok and YouTube?

Tracks from a library whose licence covers both platforms, or platform-native music added separately on each app.
