Quick answer: to shrink a video for free, start with FreeConvert Video Compressor or Mastershot. On our 10-minute, 44.5 MB test file with default settings, FreeConvert made a 25.0 MB file in about 40 seconds and Mastershot made a 30.7 MB file in about 60 seconds, both with no account and no watermark. Mastershot works inside your browser, so the file is never uploaded. HandBrake is free and open source, but its default Fast 1080p30 preset made our file bigger (83.7 MB), so pick a lower-quality preset.

You usually need a compressor when a video is too big to send, share or upload on a slow connection. Our video file size calculator shows how big a file will be at a given length and bitrate, so you can check before you export. Below, we ran one file through four free tools, then list their free limits and paid plans.

We compressed the same 10-minute video with 4 tools

We compressed the same 10-minute, 44.5 MB NASA video with four free tools on their default settings. FreeConvert made 25.0 MB, Mastershot 30.7 MB and FlexClip 38.5 MB; HandBrake's default preset made it bigger, at 83.7 MB.

How we tested

  • Every tool got the same file: 10 minutes of a public-domain NASA video, 1280x720, 30 fps, H.264, 44.5 MB, from Oct 26 to 29, 2026.
  • We kept each tool's default setting. For HandBrake that was the Fast 1080p30 preset.
  • We checked every output with a video inspection tool for size, resolution, frame rate and length, and looked at frames for a watermark.
  • No tool needed an account. Speeds depend on your connection and computer.

Other free compressors and converters

  • Shutter Encoder is a free desktop tool built on FFmpeg for converting, compressing and trimming video. We have not run our test file through it yet.
  • Your video editor. Exporting again at a lower bitrate often does the same job. See our video editing tools.

Common questions

How do I make a video smaller without losing quality?

Lower the bitrate and keep the resolution and frame rate. In our test, FreeConvert and Mastershot both kept 1280x720, 30 fps and the full 10 minutes while cutting the file to 25.0 MB and 30.7 MB. The video file size calculator shows how much a lower bitrate saves.

Do free video compressors add a watermark?

None of the four tools added a watermark to our compressed file. FlexClip is the one to watch: its compressor added none, but its video editor adds a watermark to free plan exports.

Is it safe to upload a video to an online compressor?

FreeConvert uploads your file to its server. Mastershot works inside your browser, so the file stays on your computer, and HandBrake and Shutter Encoder are desktop apps. For private footage, use a tool that keeps the file on your device.

Why did HandBrake make my file bigger?

HandBrake re-encodes to the quality its preset asks for, not to a smaller size. Our test file was already compressed for the web, so the Fast 1080p30 preset made it 88% bigger, at 83.7 MB. Pick a lower-quality preset or a lower bitrate instead.

How long does compressing a video take?

On our 10-minute file: about 40 seconds with FreeConvert, about 60 seconds with Mastershot, 3 minutes 51 seconds with HandBrake and about 6 minutes with FlexClip. Speed depends on your connection and computer.
