What is inauthentic content on YouTube?

In short: YouTube's policy name for mass-produced or repetitive videos, such as near-identical uploads made from a template.

Inauthentic content is the YouTube Partner Program rule against videos that look mass-produced or repetitive: the same template with small changes, uploaded again and again. It used to be called repetitious content.

Using AI tools or not showing your face is not the problem by itself. The problem is when every video feels interchangeable and adds little value. Varying your scripts, adding real commentary and showing your own work are the usual fixes.

Example

Picture two faceless history channels. Channel one uploads 30 videos a month from one template: the same stock intro, the same AI voice and the same script shape, with only the name of the king swapped. Channel two also uses a shared intro and outro and an AI voice, but each script is researched and structured differently, with visuals chosen for that story. YouTube's own examples treat the first pattern as interchangeable, and they say a shared intro and outro is fine as long as the bulk of each video is different.

Tips for creators

  • Open your last 20 uploads side by side. If you could swap titles between videos without anyone noticing, a reviewer may see the channel as interchangeable.
  • Keep a saved project for fonts and caption style, but change the structure, pacing and visuals for each topic, so the template speeds you up without making videos identical.
  • Swapping an AI voice for a human one does not fix a channel of near-identical videos. Rejections cite the template pattern, not the voice.

Common questions

When did YouTube rename repetitious content to inauthentic content?

On July 15, 2025. YouTube called it a minor update and said this kind of content has always been ineligible for monetization. Some headlines described it as a new ban on AI or faceless channels, but YouTube's own description is a rename and clarification of an existing rule.

Can I appeal an inauthentic content decision?

Yes. You can appeal within 21 days of the decision with an unlisted video under 5 minutes, uploaded to the channel being appealed, that shows how you make your videos. Or you can fix the channel and reapply after 30 days. After a later rejection, the wait is 90 days.
