What is an AI voice?
In short: A synthetic voice that reads your script aloud, used for voice-overs without recording yourself.
AI voice tools turn a written script into narration. The best ones sound close to a human, let you adjust pace and emphasis, and offer voice cloning so you can use a copy of your own voice.
YouTube allows AI voices on monetized channels. Check each tool's license for commercial use, and for realistic altered or synthetic content, YouTube asks you to tick its disclosure setting.
Example
Say you publish three videos this week. In the first, an AI voice reads your own script over screen recordings: no label needed. In the second, your own cloned voice dubs a video into Spanish: YouTube says that needs no label either. In the third, a realistic AI voice makes a real person appear to say something they never said. That needs the Altered content label in YouTube Studio, and you need that person's consent before you make it at all.
Tips for creators
- Check that your plan lists a commercial license before you publish on a monetized channel. ElevenLabs, for example, lists it from its Starter plan up, not on Free.
- Pick one voice and keep it on every video. On a faceless channel the voice becomes the channel's identity, so switching often makes uploads feel unrelated.
- Clone only your own voice or one you have explicit consent for. ElevenLabs states that cloning someone else's voice requires their consent.
Common questions
Does labeling AI content reduce views on YouTube?
YouTube says disclosing altered or synthetic content alone won't limit a video's audience or its eligibility to earn money. Skipping the label on realistic AI content is the bigger risk: YouTube says it may add the label itself, remove content or suspend you from the Partner Program.
Do I need to label AI voices on TikTok?
TikTok asks you to turn on its AI-generated content label when realistic images, audio or video were fully generated or significantly edited by AI. If a viewer could mistake the voice for a real person speaking, turn the label on.
