What is AI clipping?

In short: Software that finds the best moments in a long video and turns them into vertical short clips automatically.

AI clippers take a podcast, stream or long YouTube video, transcribe it, pick the moments most likely to work as standalone clips, crop them to 9:16 around the speaker and add captions. Some score each clip for how likely it is to perform.

They save hours, but the picks still need a human check: clips can start mid-sentence or miss the point. We ran the same long video through many of them to compare the results.

Example

Say you run a 45-minute podcast episode through two clippers (hypothetical numbers). Tool A suggests 38 clips, and you would post 4 of them after about 6 minutes of fixes each. Tool B suggests 22, and you would post 7 after about 3 minutes each. Tool B is the better fit: more usable clips and less fixing. Before you test, write down 3 to 5 timestamps you already know are strong, and check whether each tool finds them.

Tips for creators

  • Check that every clip has a clear start, a complete thought and an ending that doesn't cut someone off. Clippers can start a clip mid-sentence.
  • Fix names and terms in the auto captions, and check the framing on each clip. Automatic reframing can cut off a second speaker during a two-person conversation.
  • Compare plans on source-video minutes per month, not just price. Match the allowance to how many hours you record, and check whether unused credits expire.

Common questions

Are AI clips from my own podcast reused content?

Clipping your own long video or podcast is not reusing someone else's material. YouTube's reused content rule is about other people's content without a meaningful difference. If you clip other creators' shows, you need commentary or a storyline of your own, even with permission.

Do free AI clippers add a watermark?

Some do. OpusClip's free plan adds a watermark and its clips expire after 3 days, and quso.ai's free plan exports at 720p with a watermark, according to their pricing pages when we checked in October 2026. Their paid plans don't add one.
