What is an AI avatar?

In short: A computer-generated presenter that speaks your script on camera, sometimes modeled on a real person.

AI avatar tools generate a talking presenter from a script. You can pick a stock avatar or create a digital twin of yourself from a short recording. They're used for explainers, ads and multilingual versions of the same video.

Only create an avatar of someone with their clear permission. If you're worried about others copying your likeness, see our guide on protecting yourself.

Example

Say a small business asks you for one product explainer in three languages. You create a digital twin from a short recording of yourself, paste the English, Spanish and German scripts, and the avatar presents each version. Before you deliver, confirm your plan covers commercial use and client work, add captions, and check the lip-sync on names and numbers. If any version shows a realistic person who isn't you, you need that person's clear permission first.

Tips for creators

  • Get written permission before you create an avatar of anyone else, and keep a copy. YouTube lets people request removal of realistic AI versions of themselves.
  • Label realistic avatar videos when you upload. YouTube asks for disclosure when content makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn't.
  • Turn on YouTube's likeness detection if it's available to you. It scans for videos where your face appears altered or generated by AI and lists matches in YouTube Studio.

Common questions

Can I get a deepfake of me removed from YouTube?

Yes, through YouTube's privacy complaint process, if the video shows a realistic altered or synthetic version of you and you can be identified. The complaint must come from you or your legal representative. YouTube weighs things like parody and satire, so not every request leads to removal.

Who can use YouTube's likeness detection?

You need to be 18 or over and the Channel Owner or Manager. Setup asks for a government ID and a short selfie video, and verification can take up to 5 days. The feature is experimental and not yet available in every country.
