What is cross-posting?

In short: Posting the same short video to several platforms, such as Shorts, TikTok and Reels.

Cross-posting lets one video reach audiences on several apps. Scheduling tools can publish to all of them from one upload.

Export a clean file without another app's watermark, adjust captions and hashtags for each platform, and check each platform's length limits. Note that TikTok's Creator Rewards Program counts only original content.

Example

Say you finish a 70-second video. Export one clean 1080 × 1920 master from your editor. On YouTube, write a short title that makes sense in search. On TikTok and Reels, keep the caption conversational and use no more than five hashtags, since both apps limit posts to five. If the TikTok version uses a Commercial Music Library track, swap the audio before posting to YouTube. Check each preview for covered text, then watch every live post through once.

Tips for creators

  • Keep Shorts with copyrighted music under 1 minute, or use cleared audio. A YouTube Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim is blocked worldwide.
  • Confirm your scheduler is connected to the right account on each platform, and check its posting limits on the plan you use.
  • Space posts out if your audience overlaps across apps, and keep a simple log of what went where so you can compare results later.

Common questions

What are the length limits for Shorts, TikTok and Reels?

YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes. Through their APIs, which scheduling tools use, TikTok accepts videos up to 10 minutes and Instagram accepts Reels from 3 seconds to 15 minutes. In-app limits can differ, so check each app if you upload directly.

How many hashtags should I use when cross-posting?

TikTok and Instagram both limit posts to five hashtags. On YouTube, if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. A few relevant tags per platform work better than one long list copied everywhere.
