Turn one long video into a week of Shorts, Reels and TikToks.
A weekly workflow to cut podcasts and long YouTube videos into captioned vertical clips, review them, schedule to three platforms and track results.
Pick a source episode that clips well
AI clippers can only find moments that exist; episodes with clear, self-contained answers and stories produce far more usable clips than rambling or visual-only footage.
- Choose one episode per week where you own all footage and any music; strip or replace licensed music before clipping.
- Prefer a clean 16:9 recording with one speaker framed per camera so auto-reframe can track faces.
- Note 3-5 timestamps you already know are strong (a story, a bold claim, a how-to answer) to check the AI against.
- Check your clipper's limits before uploading: Vizard Free accepts up to 60 minutes / 1GB per upload; OpusClip Free deletes exports after 3 days.
Tool: Descript · Free option: Your own YouTube Studio retention graph to find the episode's strongest sections
Tip: Use the long video's audience retention 'spikes' in YouTube Studio as a shortlist; YouTube says spikes mark sections viewers rewatched or shared.
Run AI clip detection and compare clippers honestly
Each clipper charges differently (minutes, credits or clip counts), so the right one depends on how many hours of footage you process each month, not on which one has the most features.
- Upload the file or paste the YouTube link (OpusClip lists YouTube import on all plans, including Free).
- Measure usage: quso.ai and Vizard use about 1 credit per minute of video; Klap counts clips (Basic is 100 clips/mo); Munch Essential includes 500 repurposing minutes/mo; Descript counts media hours (Hobbyist 10 hours/mo).
- Generate clips, then compare the AI's top picks against your own 3-5 timestamps; keep only clips that make sense without the episode.
- Test free tiers first: OpusClip Free (watermark on animated captions, 3-day storage), Vizard Free (60 credits, 720p export, watermark), quso.ai Free (75 credits, 720p), Descript Free (1 media hour, 720p, watermark).
Tool: OpusClip · Free option: Vizard
Tip: If your episodes are long but you only want a few clips, a per-clip plan (Klap) can cost less than a per-minute plan; if you want many clips from short episodes, the reverse is true.
Review, trim and decide clip length
AI picks often start mid-thought or end before the payoff, and any claimable music in a clip can trigger a copyright claim, so length and audio are rights decisions as well as creative ones.
- Watch every clip fully; cut to the first line that makes sense on its own and end on the payoff.
- Keep most clips under 60 seconds; go up to 3 minutes on YouTube Shorts only when the content needs it, and keep claimable music or footage out of every clip.
- Fix caption errors on names, numbers and jargon in the transcript editor (Descript or the clipper's editor).
- Remove filler words and long pauses; check that the first 2 seconds state the topic.
Tool: Descript · Free option: CapCut
Tip: Reject any clip that needs context from earlier in the episode; a 30-second clip that stands alone beats a 90-second clip that relies on setup.
Reframe to 9:16 and burn in captions
YouTube classifies square or vertical videos up to three minutes as Shorts, and vertical 9:16 is the shared format across Shorts, TikTok and Reels, so one export can serve all three.
- Export at 9:16, 1080x1920; check that auto-reframe keeps the active speaker in frame during cross-talk.
- Place captions in the middle third so platform buttons and descriptions do not cover them.
- Export without a watermark from any other app before posting to Instagram or TikTok (paid tiers of OpusClip, Vizard and Descript remove watermarks).
- Name files with episode number and clip number so analytics can be traced back to the source.
Tool: OpusClip · Free option: CapCut
Tip: Use YouTube Audio Library music on Shorts if you add a bed; YouTube says those tracks do not receive Content ID claims, though most are capped at 90 seconds within a Short.
Schedule to all three platforms in one pass
Batching a week of clips in one sitting is what makes the cadence sustainable, but each scheduler has posting limits that affect what can publish automatically.
- Queue 1 clip per day per platform for the week in Metricool or Buffer.
- On Buffer, TikTok videos auto-publish only if they are 3 seconds to 10 minutes, 1GB or less, in MOV, MP4 or WEBM; anything else falls back to a phone notification.
- Use notification publishing for TikTok posts where you want in-app music or polls, since Buffer cannot add those automatically.
- Watch free caps: Buffer Free allows 10 scheduled posts per channel (3 channels); Metricool Free allows 20 scheduled posts per month for 1 brand.
Tool: Metricool · Free option: Buffer
Tip: Seven clips to three platforms is 21 posts a week, which exceeds both free plans' caps; either post fewer clips or budget for Buffer Essentials or Metricool Starter.
Measure what works and feed it back
The point of a weekly cadence is learning which topics and openings hold viewers, so next week's clip picks get better than the AI's defaults.
- Each week, log per clip: platform, length, views, average view duration and the first line.
- In YouTube Studio, open each Short's analytics and check how many viewers chose to view versus swipe away.
- Use Metricool's cross-platform analytics (30 days of history on Free, unlimited from Starter) to compare the same clip across platforms.
- Pick next week's source moments to match the top 2-3 clip types, not the top-performing platform alone.
Tool: Metricool · Free option: Native analytics in YouTube Studio, TikTok and Instagram
Tip: Compare clips from the same episode against each other; differences between episodes often reflect the topic, not your editing.
What it costs
Watermarks or 720p exports on free clippers (Vizard, quso.ai, Descript), 3-day storage on OpusClip and Vizard Free, and scheduling caps of 10 posts per channel (Buffer) or 20 per month (Metricool), which is not enough for daily posting on three platforms.
| OpusClip | Starter | $15/mo (Pro, which adds the built-in scheduler, is $29/mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Descript | Hobbyist | $16/mo billed annually, $24 monthly |
| Metricool | Starter | From $20/mo billed annually, $25 monthly, excl. VAT |
| Buffer | Essentials | $5/mo per channel billed monthly ($15/mo for three channels) |
| Klap | Basic | $14/mo billed yearly, 100 clips/mo |
| quso.ai | Lite | $19/mo billed yearly, $29 monthly |
| Munch | Essential | $38/mo or $456/yr, 500 repurposing minutes/mo |
| Vizard | Creator | Not published in a readable form; check vizard.ai/pricing (Free: 60 credits/mo, 1 credit = 1 minute) |
Rules to know before you post
- YouTube's Reused content policy for YPP applies even with the original creator's permission, so clipping someone else's podcast without adding commentary or meaningful edits can block monetization for the whole channel.
- YouTube's Shorts copyright rule: until 24 September 2026, any Short over one minute with an active copyright claim was blocked; YouTube says new claimed Shorts over one minute are no longer automatically blocked, but claims still apply to the video.
- YouTube Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds of a three-minute Short, and some tracks are capped at 60 or 30 seconds.
- TikTok's Community Guidelines (Integrity and Authenticity) restrict unoriginal content from the For You feed and require AI-generated content to be labeled, so add your own framing rather than reposting raw clips.
Common mistakes
- Posting every clip the AI suggests: review each one and cut anything that needs earlier context or starts mid-sentence.
- Leaving licensed intro music in clips: a copyright claim still applies to the Short, so strip music before clipping.
- Uploading files with another app's watermark to Instagram or TikTok: export clean files from a paid tier or a free editor without a watermark.
- Choosing a plan by feature list: estimate your monthly minutes or clip count first, because credits, minutes and clip caps vary widely between clippers.
Questions
How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?
Up to three minutes, for square or vertical videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. Since 24 September 2026, new Shorts over one minute with a third-party claim are no longer automatically blocked, but keep claimable music out of clips anyway.
Which AI clipper is cheapest for a weekly podcast?
It depends on usage. A one-hour weekly episode is about 4-5 hours a month: quso.ai and Vizard charge about one credit per minute, Klap charges per clip (100 clips on the $14/mo yearly Basic plan), and Descript Hobbyist includes 10 media hours. Test the free tiers on one episode before paying.
Can I schedule TikToks automatically with Buffer?
Yes, if the video is 3 seconds to 10 minutes, 1GB or less, and MOV, MP4 or WEBM. Posts that need in-app music or polls, or exceed the limits, are sent as a phone notification for you to finish in TikTok.
Can I clip other people's podcasts if they say it's OK?
Permission covers copyright, but YouTube's Reused content policy for YPP still applies; you need meaningful commentary or edits for the channel to stay monetizable.
