Make and post your first shorts with just a phone and $0.
A free, phone-only routine to plan, film, edit, caption and post Shorts, TikToks and Reels, then check retention before the next video.
Plan one idea and film it vertically
A clear single point and a strong first seconds matter more than gear. Filming vertically avoids cropping and keeps the video classed as a Short.
- Write a one-line hook, three beats and an ending in your phone's notes app.
- Film in the native camera app held upright, at 1080p (or 4K if storage allows), with the light source in front of you.
- Keep the planned edit under 3 minutes: YouTube counts square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes as Shorts.
- Record two or three takes of the hook so you can pick the best one in the edit.
Tool: YouTube Create · Free option: Phone camera and notes app
Tip: Film the hook last, once you know how the video ends: it is easier to promise a payoff you have already recorded.
Edit in a free mobile editor
Trimming dead air and tightening the opening is where most beginner videos improve. Both editors below are free for core editing.
- On Android or iPhone XR and newer (iOS 17+), use YouTube Create: Google lists it as free of charge and without ads.
- Alternatively use Edits by Meta: its App Store listing calls it free, says it exports in 4K with no watermark and shares to any platform (the listing also shows in-app purchases).
- Set the project to 9:16, cut every pause, and put the strongest line in the first two seconds.
- Export at 1080p; that is enough for Shorts, TikTok and Reels.
Tool: YouTube Create · Free option: edits-by-meta or capcut (Free plan: basic editing tools and free templates)
Tip: CapCut Pro is listed at $19.99/mo on capcut.com/pricing (final price shown after sign-in). If a template shows a Pro badge, swap it before building the edit around it.
Add captions and copyright-safe music
Many viewers watch muted, so on-screen captions carry the message. Music from an unlicensed source can get a Short blocked or claimed.
- Use the editor's auto-caption tool, then read every line and fix names and numbers by hand.
- For YouTube, download tracks from the YouTube Audio Library in YouTube Studio; YouTube says these are not claimed through Content ID.
- Filter the library by 'Attribution not required', or copy the credit Studio generates into your description for Creative Commons tracks.
- For a TikTok Business account, use the Commercial Music Library: TikTok's Business Help Center says businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial use.
- Since 24 September 2026, YouTube says new Shorts over one minute with a Content ID claim are no longer automatically blocked, but the claim still applies, so stick to Audio Library tracks.
Tool: YouTube Audio Library · Free option: TikTok Commercial Music Library
Tip: In a Short up to 3 minutes, YouTube says Audio Library songs can usually run up to 90 seconds, but some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds; check before you cut to the beat.
Make a cover frame
The cover shows on your profile grid and in some feeds, so a readable title helps people pick your video.
- In Canva Free, create a 1080x1920 design and use a free template.
- Put 3-5 large words in the centre, away from the top and bottom edges where app buttons sit.
- Download as PNG and add it as the cover or thumbnail when posting where the app allows, or pick a clear frame from the video.
Tool: Canva · Free option: Canva Free, or select a frame from the video in the upload screen
Tip: Templates and elements marked as premium need Canva Pro; filter for free items so you are not blocked at download.
Post, then read the retention data
Analytics show where people stop watching, which tells you what to change next time. Posting without reviewing repeats the same mistakes.
- Upload through the YouTube app or YouTube Studio (up to 15 files at once on desktop), and through the TikTok or Instagram app.
- Wait 1-2 days, then open the video's Analytics in YouTube Studio: YouTube says retention data takes 1-2 days to process.
- Check the key moments report for dips, where viewers skip or leave, and note the second they happen.
- On TikTok, open TikTok Studio and review the per-video analytics.
Tool: TikTok Studio · Free option: YouTube Studio analytics (free)
Tip: Note the timestamp of the biggest dip next to the script line it matches, and rework that kind of line in the next video.
What it costs
No premium templates or AI credits in CapCut, no premium Canva elements or Brand Kit, and less cloud storage. YouTube Create and Edits by Meta are free for core editing.

Rules to know before you post
- Under YouTube's copyright rules, uploading a Short with music you do not have rights to risks a Content ID claim or copyright strike and possible removal.
- YouTube Audio Library Creative Commons tracks require credit to the artist in the description, while Standard Audio Library license tracks do not.
- TikTok's Business Help Center says businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial use and should use the Commercial Music Library instead.
- YouTube says uploads from creators aged 13 to 17 default to private, so check visibility before publishing.
Common mistakes
- Filming horizontally and cropping later; film upright from the start so the frame and resolution hold up.
- Using trending songs from other apps in a YouTube Short; use the Audio Library to avoid claims and blocks.
- Trusting auto-captions without proofreading; wrong names or numbers make the video look careless.
- Judging a video after a few hours; wait the 1-2 days YouTube needs to process retention data before drawing conclusions.
Questions
Can I make YouTube Shorts for free on my phone?
Yes. YouTube Create is a free, ad-free Google editing app for Android and iPhone XR or newer on iOS 17+, and you can upload through the YouTube app. Music from the YouTube Audio Library is free and is not claimed through Content ID.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Videos with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes long count as Shorts if uploaded on or after 15 October 2024. Anything wider, such as 16:9, is treated as a regular long-form video.
Which free video editor has no watermark?
Google describes YouTube Create as free and without ads, and the Edits by Meta App Store listing says it exports in 4K with no watermark. Check each app's current listing, since free terms can change.
Is music on CapCut or TikTok safe to use on YouTube?
Not automatically. YouTube says only its Audio Library music and sound effects are known to be copyright-safe on YouTube, and it does not take responsibility for royalty-free music from other sources.
