What is audience retention?

In short: How much of your video people watch, shown as an average percentage and a graph of where viewers drop off.

Audience retention tells you how long viewers stayed. For short videos it can go above 100% when people rewatch or the video loops. The retention graph is the most useful part: a sharp drop marks the exact second people lost interest.

Platforms tend to show videos with strong retention to more people, so improving it is one of the few levers you fully control. Tighter edits, faster pacing and a clear payoff near the end all help.

Example

Say a 40-second Short still holds 90% of viewers at 0:03 but falls to 55% by 0:12 (hypothetical numbers). Line the graph up with your script: at 0:12 you start six seconds of background before the actual tip. Cut that line, move the tip up to 0:08, and compare the next Short's graph. If you see a spike, where the line rises, viewers rewatched or shared that moment, so note what was on screen and use more of it.

Tips for creators

  • Wait 1 to 2 days after posting before you judge a video. YouTube says audience retention data typically takes that long to process.
  • Write the timestamp of the biggest drop next to the script line it matches, then rework that kind of line in your next batch.
  • Cut every pause and any shot that runs longer than the line it illustrates. Dead air near the start is usually the easiest drop-off to fix.

Common questions

What are key moments in YouTube audience retention?

YouTube Studio highlights four types: the intro, which shows how many viewers are still watching after 30 seconds; top moments where almost no one dropped off; spikes that were rewatched or shared; and dips where viewers stopped watching or skipped ahead.

Why don't I see key moments for my Shorts?

YouTube only highlights key moments for videos at least 60 seconds long with at least 100 views. Many Shorts are shorter than that, so you get the retention graph without the labeled moments. Read the graph yourself and look for the steepest drop.
