What is a hook in short-form video?
In short: The first one to three seconds of a short video, built to stop the viewer from scrolling past.
In a feed of vertical videos, people decide almost instantly whether to keep watching. The hook is whatever you put in that moment: a bold line, a surprising image, on-screen text that names the payoff, or starting in the middle of the action.
A weak hook shows up in your analytics as a high share of viewers swiping away. Cutting slow intros, greetings and logos from the start is usually the quickest improvement.
Example
Before: "Hey guys, welcome back. Today I want to talk about lighting." That is three seconds with no reason to stay. After: open on the finished, well-lit shot with on-screen text that reads "One window fixed my lighting", then cut straight to you turning to face the window. The second version names the payoff in the first frame and starts in the middle of the action. A day or two after posting, compare how many viewers stayed past the opening on each version.
Tips for creators
- Write each idea as a one-line hook that says what the viewer gets, not what the video is about. Collect a week of them in one sitting.
- Record two or three takes of the hook. Filming it last, once you know how the video ends, makes it easier to promise a payoff you already have.
- Put a short on-screen caption in the first frame. Many people watch with the sound off, so the text has to carry the promise by itself.
Common questions
How long should a hook be on Shorts or TikTok?
Platforms don't set a length. A practical target is to state the promise within the first two seconds, before any greeting or logo, and deliver the payoff later in the video. Then check your swipe-away and retention data to see whether the opening held viewers.
Can an AI hook generator write my hooks?
It can suggest openings, and YouTube allows AI help with ideas and scripts. Treat the suggestions as a draft: rewrite the line in your own words, make sure the video delivers what it promises, and avoid reusing the same formula on every upload.
