Short answer: if you like editing by transcript but want something cheaper or simpler, try Gling for cutting silences and bad takes from YouTube recordings (from $10/mo billed yearly). If you need free exports, Clipchamp exports at 1080p with no watermark, and Wisecut has a free 480p plan. If your real goal is turning podcasts into Shorts, an AI clipper such as OpusClip or Riverside.fm fits better.

Text-based and auto-cut editors
Gling
Gling's free plan gives 1 hour of AI-edited media a month, with watermarked MP4 exports and no export to Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve. Plus is $10/mo billed yearly or $20 monthly for 10 hours, with no watermark. It suits solo YouTubers who record long takes and want silences and retakes removed automatically.
Wisecut
Wisecut's free plan is 30 minutes a month at 480p, with exports up to 3 minutes. Its pricing page lists no watermark on any plan. Starter+ is $279 a year (about $23.25/mo) and adds 1080p. Good for quick jump cuts, less so for long episodes.
Simon Says
A transcription tool rather than an editor. Pay as you go costs $15 an hour ($0.25 a minute) with no subscription. Starter is $15/mo billed annually ($20 monthly) for 2 hours a month. Pick it if you stay in Premiere or Final Cut and just want transcripts and subtitles sent to your editor.
Happy Scribe
The free plan includes a 10-minute AI trial for transcription and subtitles. Basic is $8.50/mo billed annually or $17 monthly for 120 minutes a month. Human proofreading starts at $2.00 a minute, which matters if your captions must be accurate.
Podcast-to-clips tools
Riverside.fm
The free plan records at up to 720p, includes 2 hours of multi-track recording, and adds a Riverside watermark. Paid plans remove it. Riverside's pricing page flagged itself as possibly outdated when we checked, so check current pricing on Riverside. Best if you record interviews and want clips from the same tool.
OpusClip
Free clips render at up to 1080p but carry a watermark, and files expire after 3 days. Starter is $15/mo and Pro $29/mo, both without a watermark. Best for turning long episodes into captioned vertical clips without editing by hand.
Castmagic
No free plan is listed. Hobby is $19/mo billed yearly ($239/yr) for 30 hours of transcription. It makes show notes, transcripts and social copy, not video.
Free full editors
CapCut
The free plan covers basic editing and free templates on phone, desktop and web. Pro is $19.99/mo as a reference price that varies by region. Use it if you want a free timeline editor and don't need transcript editing.
Clipchamp
Free for personal Microsoft accounts, with 1080p exports and no watermark. Premium comes with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family. The best choice for free, clean exports on Windows.
What you give up by leaving Descript
- Editing video by deleting words. Gling and Wisecut cut automatically, but you don't edit a full transcript the same way.
- One tool for record, edit and clip. You may end up with two tools, for example Riverside to record and OpusClip to clip.
- 4K export on a mid plan. Descript Creator includes 4K. Wisecut needs Professional+ for 4K.
Best for
- Cheapest auto-cutting: Gling Plus at $10/mo billed yearly, against $16 for Descript Hobbyist.
- Free and no watermark: Clipchamp (1080p).
- Podcast to Shorts: OpusClip, or Riverside.fm if you already record there.
- Transcripts for another editor: Simon Says or Happy Scribe.
